Best Thing: heart-pounding action
Worst Thing: story line a little inconsistent and fragmented
Beowulf is an animated action adventure-fantasy film, set sometime around 100-200 AD. The film chronicles the deeds of the hero, Beowulf. Beowulf is a heroic problem solver, and originally comes to the kingdom with a band of intrepid followers, to slay a demom terrorising it. He is then drawn into the web of magic and demons which sees him become a king.
Visually, this film is extremely good. There are many times when you almost forget that this is an animation, and it really makes the action sequences come alive. This is great because it is the action scenes that will occupy post-session discussion. Enough for any fan of action, Beowulf is gory, raucous and fast; the action hits in the first ten minutes and scarcely lets up throughout the entire film. When it does, it is only to give precedence to scenes of romantic interest, which also set the pulse racing. Move over Lara Croft, Angelina Jollie looks unbelievable in animated form, an absolute must for fans of this genre.
If there is one minor criticism, it is only that the plot doesn't quite work, for the aforementioned reasons. However, the action is so omnipresent, that you do not notice until you get out of the theatre. It may become more annoying in DVD ownership, however.
For fans of action, fantasy, animation, Lara Croft or Angelina Jolie, Beowulf is a must.
