Peter Jackson is the Cecil B DeMill of our generation. He doesn't do anything by halves and King Kong is another monstrous epic in everything meaning of the word. It's just chockers from start to finish with full-on, full-boar, over-the-top everything and it's exhausting and you love it.
The special effects are invisible - you're not aware that most of the creatures you're watching aren't real despite the sheer incredulousness of it and they are plonked in there for the sake of it. That there is an island forgotten in time inhabited by giant everything's makes sense in the context of the story.
The acting is superb, Naomi is really the most beautiful actor, she has so much soul and innocence and because of this I think is a far stronger actor than either Cate or Nicole.
The scary bits were soooooooo scary. Don't take kids if they frighten easily. And if you have a fear of heights (like moi) then you're going to be squirming in your seat (sorry to the people I was sitting next too last night!!)
There were some weird bits in the script, like why are they travelling to the island against their better judgement, and there's an attempt to late to justify it but it's forgivable in the broader scheme. The story does also ask the question: how many people do you risk and loose just to save one person? So it's a bit hollywood in that respect but again you forgive it just because it's that much fun.
There are a few references to the original - watch out the for "natives" who are part of the show when Kong is on display as they are a direct copy of the natives on the island from the original film plus the classic ending of Kong on the State Empire Building, fighting bi-planes. Top stuff!
I just want to also make special mention of Thomas Kretschmann who is a total HOTTIE (he's the captain of the boat).
