Best Thing: Atmosphere
Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt make a surprisingly well suited coupling as the aged and world weary Detective Somerset and youthful, idealist Detective Mills. I was personally blown away firstly by the visuals that director David Fincher was able to craft around these 2 central characters, and secondly by how well developed these 2 male characters were throughout the film. Gwyneth Paltrow, as Mrs Mills and Kevin Spacey as the serial killer John Doe play fantastic supporting foils to the emotional interactions of the 2 main characters and the cold grey city is an presence onscreen that envelops these 2 men in its claustrophobic proximity.
As the movie progresses, and serial killer John Doe's killing spree continues ever forward we know that somehow the 3 mens paths will collide at some fateful intersection.
Seven refers to the 7 deadly sins that are the basis for the serial killers handiwork, to the 7 days till Detective Somerset retires and leaves the oppresive city, and the 7 days it takes for the killer to complete his deadly plan.
And just as the sun rises on the 7th day in the film we know that something terrible will happen when it sets.
From the menacing title music created by Howard Shore which intergrated Nine Inch Nails classic industrial anthem "Closer" through the wet/rainy city grey visual effects, ending with the deadly intersecting of well crafted characters, this wonderful dark mix of flawed people and atmospheric claustophobia is compulsive viewing.
