I read the book by Phillipa Gregory before seeing this movie, and was a bit disappointed that it differed so much from it. The opening scene was taken from the middle of the book, and they gave the Boleyn mother a motherly instinct which she distinctively lacked in Gregory's rendition of events.

All that aside, the story of King Henry VIII and the Boleyn three (Anne, Mary and George) was beautifully filmed and the storyline did make sense. I was surprised by Scarlett Johanssen's portrayal of Mary, she did the English accent perfectly. Natalie Portman was a little disappointing but this may have been due to high expectations on my part, as I always thought Portman was the better actor of the two.

Do watch it for a bit of history. But better yet, read the book!
