Best Thing: Black and white heigtens the tragedy...
Worst Thing: Why not more russian films like this?
So if you were stuck in a sub-zero freezing country drinking dodgy vodka and being threatened by Moscow gangsters with ouzos in mercs - would you make a film like this?
Yes. I think you would.
An inheritor of the tragic depressive outlook that is so moving that is actually becomes uplifting. Director Ersi Danou channels his cultural ancestors - Chekhov/Dostoevsky and Tolstoy - to create a simple tale of a son, a father, a death and lost childhood. See it.
