In small doses, Debra Messing’s neurotic Grace Adler persona from TV’s Will And Grace is palatable, and even funny. Unfortunately, over the course of an hour and a half, her daffy-then-angsty schtick wears very thin. Like My Best Friend’s Wedding without any heart, The Wedding Date pitches Messing as a crotchety spinster who, rather than enduring the shame of attending another wedding on her own, pays a handsome stranger to pose as her date. It’s as slight a premise as humanly possible – and one that will fail to excite all but the most gormless viewer. Of course, this wouldn’t make it much worse than your average romcom if it wasn’t for the lack of any laughs. That’s right, The Wedding Date is a romantic comedy without any comedy! We’re left with plenty of Messing blubbering into a hankie and Dermot Mulroney being “sensitive” – but not much more. Even the most shameless romcom manages to be, at the least, unchallenging, harmless fun, but The Wedding Date can’t even get the bare essentials right.
