Best Thing: special effects
The first time I heard H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds radio play, I was about 10 and it really scared the pants off me. Ever since then, I was always fascinated by the story. So when I heard Spielberg was making a War of the Worlds movie, I couldn’t wait to see it and I wasn’t disappointed.
Of course being a Spielberg movie, you can expect amazing special effects and massive destructions - he definitely delivered that again. Cruise’s performance was pretty average, not really one of his best works. Dakota Fanning is the only one who really holds the film together in terms of acting. Besides a couple of flaws (I still don’t know how all digital and video cameras were able to operate normally when all electric devices was supposedly disabled by the aliens?), it was still a movie worth watching. It has a good mix of mystery, suspense, terror, and intrigue with Spielberg’s usual high budget special effects. I was however a little disappointed with the ending and if you have never heard the War of the Worlds story before, you may be a little confused by the ending, but other then that, it was still captivating movie.
