Unlike most Tim Burton-Johnny Depp collaborations, this movie wasn't succesful. It failed to excite cinema-goers, who might have taken one look at a wackily costumed Depp and gothic setting in the trailer and thought they'd seen it all before. It massively underperformed in its opening weekend, and only made back a third of its production cost in the United States.
