SURPRISE: "Life of Pi"

Ang Lee's gorgeous pantheistic fable about a guy and a tiger wound up on a bunch of end-of-year top-10 lists, but it usually was slotted somewhere near the bottom. The movie just didn't have the critical profile of a "Lincoln" or a "Zero Dark Thirty." Yet as quietly and stealthily as a tiger on the prowl, the movie nabbed important nominations from organizations ranging from the Directors Guild of America to Britain's BAFTA.
