Tsai Ming-liang is the master of cinematic tableau and this elliptical, dazzlingly beautiful film was commissioned by The Louvre which provides the perfect setting for his avant-garde spectacular. A Taiwainese film director who cannot speak French is invited to Paris to make a film based on the story of Salome. Cultural dissonance and issues of translation all start to play havoc with his capacity to deliver on the film.
