Angelina Jolie was 'different' as a kid

Angelina Jolie was told she was "different" as a child.

The 39-year-old actress admitted at the Kids' Choice Awards - her first public appearance since revealing she had her ovaries removed - that she didn't fit in when she was a youngster.

Speaking at the ceremony in Los Angeles on Saturday (28.03.14), she told the audience while accepting the trophy for Best Villain for her role as the titular character in 'Maleficent': "When I was a kid I was told - like Maleficent - that I was different. But then I realised something: different is good. So maybe you don't fit in. Be yourself."

She added: "When someone tells you that you are different just smile and hold your head up, and be proud. And as your villain. I would say, 'Cause a little trouble. It is good for you!' "

Angelina's appearance at the awards show comes just a few days after she revealed she recently underwent a procedure to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes after tests flagged markers that she could be in the early stages of ovarian cancer.

The brunette beauty - whose mother, grandmother and aunt died of cancer - said on Monday (23.03.15): "Last week, I had the procedure: a laparoscopic bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. There was a small benign tumor on one ovary, but no signs of cancer in any of the tissues."

The operation comes two years after the actress underwent a double mastectomy having discovered she carried a gene, which meant she had an 87 per cent risk of developing breast cancer and a 50 per cent risk of ovarian cancer.

Following her most recent surgery, the 'Unbroken' director has been taking hormone replacements but will never be able to have more children with husband Brad Pitt.

Angelina and Brad, who got married last year, have children, Maddox, 13, Pax, 11 and Zahara 10, Shiloh, eight, and six-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne together.
