Jonny Quest 'to become feature-length film'

The animated TV series 'Jonny Quest' is reportedly set to be turned into a movie.

The iconic sci-fi/adventure show, which debuted in the US in 1964, is set to make its long-awaited transition to the big screen, with 'Spy Kids' filmmaker Robert Rodriguez leading the project.

The 46-year-old director - whose previous credits also include 'Sin City' and 'From Dusk till Dawn' - will adapt a pre-existing screenplay penned by Dan Mazeau, although it remains unclear what the adventure will feature, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The original animated series only aired for a single season, but the brand has remained popular owing to a number of subsequent spin-offs, including two television films and three computer games.

The Hanna-Barbera cartoon series saw Jonny, his father Dr Benton Quest and a small crew of companions - including Hadji, a Kolkatan orphan and Jonny's best friend - go on a series of adventures around the world as they combated evil.

Efforts have been made before to transform the iconic animated series into a movie, with Zac Efron and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson both eyed for a proposed film adaptation in 2009.

However, development on the project stalled and the idea was subsequently abandoned.
