Wacky, ingenious, hobby for the bored, and extreme art are just some of the ways to describe an exhibition of reworked garbage.
Reverse Garbage Christmas Exhibition displays the works of more than a dozen local artists who have turned, well, junk and salvaged building materials and scraps into sellable art.
Cate Collopy used discarded electrical wire to spend hours making a woven basket, approximately 15cm in diameter, to sell for $132.It's not the most expensive item for sale, but it's up there with three wire baskets selling for $190.
The cheapest item is a pair of earrings made from perspex and electrical cord for $20.Exhibition curator Brooke Nelson says the exhibitions are held every three months and hopefully will inspire people to think of ways to reuse material they normally would throw out.
"The exhibition reveals a multitude of ways unwanted off-cuts and scraps can be used to make useful beautiful artworks, jewellery, home wares and clothes," Ms Nelson said."All works consist of 75 per cent or more of salvaged material and (are) handcrafted by local artists."
The exhibition runs from November 9-21 at Reverse Garbage, 296 Montague Rd, West End in Brisbane.
