Much of the criticism was directed at the oddly unflattering cut of the 'front' of the dress, which bore a striking resemblance to a black satin cushion cover.
But as fashion journalists investigated further it came to light that perhaps the dress, by Lanvin designer Alber Elbaz, was actually being worn back-to-front.
Fashion website Styleite was first to report the unusual red carpet fail saying "the front of the dress (when worn correctly, we mean) features a deep cross-over v-neck, with a faux waist-belt detail and an asymmetrical hem, and the back is a plain high neckline with no detailing."
Styleite also suggested that the curious decision to wear the dress backwards was actually down to the fact that the off the peg dress had been customised by the designer specifically for Ms. Weaver.
"On the red carpet, it appears that Weaver wore the top part of the dress backwards, but kept the bottom half as is."
Weaver was nominated in the Outstanding Female Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries for her performance in the TV mini-series Political Animals but was pipped to the post by Julianne Moore won for her performance as Sarah Palin in "Game Change."
With all the attention her dress was getting this might be one time that she was pleased not to have to go up onto the podium to accept an award...
