And it turns out, we weren't the only ones who were impressed.

Two of the actors from the upcoming film - which will be released on December 17 - have filmed their reactions when seeing the trailer for the very first time.

Daisy Ridley, who plays a woman who holds the power of the Force, Rey, couldn't hold back her tears at seeing the 2-minute clip.

"Oh my God, it's amazing!," she screamed, wiping tears from her eyes.

John Boyega promised fans on Twitter he would film his reaction to the trailer, and he didn't disappoint:

His reaction involved a whole lot of nodding and "yeps", followed by a dramatic flip over the back of a couch.

The trailer, which premiered Monday night (US time) on Disney-owned ESPN during Monday Night Football, gave fans the most in-depth look yet at J.J. Abrams’s film, the seventh in the Star Wars franchise.

In addition to some breathtaking action scenes, the new trailer offers us a glimpse at the villainous plan of Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) to follow in Darth Vader’s footsteps; Rey (Daisy Ridley) and the revelation that she holds the power of the Force; and the transformation of Finn (John Boyega) from First Order soldier to rebel.
