Katheryn Winnick joins The Dark Tower

'Vikings' star Katheryn Winnick has joined the cast of 'The Dark Tower'.

The 38-year-old beauty has boarded the Sony Pictures project that has already begun production with Idris Elba, Matthew McConaughey and Tom Taylor in lead roles.

Though it's not clear who Katheryn will play, the film is based on Stephen King's series of novels of the same name which are set in a world woven with magic and will follow the story told in the first book titled 'The Gunslinger'.

Idris, 43, stars as the central character, gunslinger Roland Deschain, and his relationship with Jake Chambers, played by Tom, will take centre stage,

Matthew portrays Walter Padick, who is known in the book as the Man in Black.

The novel is a mixture of horror and fantasy and follows Roland as he dedicates his life to locating the nexus of the universe, 'The Dark Tower', before evil invades and ends all existence by destroying it.

Writer-and-filmmaker Nikolaj Arcel is already on board to direct from a script written by Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinker.

Meanwhile, Katheryn hails from Canada and rose to fame in the History Channel's drama about the Scandinavian seafaring pirates and traders, as wife-turned-chieftain Lagertha Lothbrok.

The popular series has finished its fourth season and a fifth has recently been announced.
