The AACTA (Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts) Awards, newly established by the Australian Film Institute (AFI) a year ago, will be held on January 30, 2013 at The Star. Following an impressive year in Australian cinema, there are a large number of AACTA Award hopefuls over 40 categories, with Indigenous film The Sapphires coming out on top with a massive 12 nominations. The film received a 10 minute standing ovation at Cannes in May and was a box office hit.

The emotive Burning Man has been nominated for ten awards, with German language feature , comic drama Mental and dramatic thriller Wish You Were Here also tipped to win some gongs, boasting eight nominations apiece.

In the running for Best Lead Actor are Joel Edgerton for Wish You Were Here, Matthew Goode for Burning Man, Chris O’Dowd for The Sapphires and Guy Pearce for 33 POSTCARDS. Meanwhile, Aussie favourites Toni Collette, Deborah Mailman, Felicity Price and Sarah Snook are vying for the female trophy.

In television, fresh Aussie drama Puberty Blues is being recognised with several nominations including Best Television Drama Series, while eye-opening documentaries Go Back to Where You Came From and Once Upon a Time in Cabramatta are also being given well-deserved nods.

Give a round of applause for the lucky nominees:
