'Grace of Monaco' copped some of the worst reviews for a Cannes opener, with some critics labeling it a "breathtaking catastrophe" and "relentlessly middlebrow mush".

Kidman plays actress-turned-royal Grace Kelly in the film, which focuses on the tensions between Monaco and France that prompted her to turn down a return to acting.

Kelly's family recently released a statement about the film, saying, "The princely family does not in any way wish to be associated with this film, which reflects no reality, and regrets that its history has been misappropriated for purely commercial purposes."

Kidman admitted that the royal reaction was "awkward", she said the film was fictionalised and maintained "as with a lot of these things you take dramatic license at times."
