The world’s future is bleak. Scattered human corpses line the streets – the remains of mortals who dared to support the X-Men. Programmed robots, known as Sentinels, patrol the dark skies – sent on a mission to hunt down and kill the mutants.

As one last, desperate gamble to prevent the wipe-out of civilisation, Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and Magneto (Ian McKellen) call upon Kitty Pryde (Ellen Paige) to transport Wolverine’s consciousness back to the 1970s to rally the younger X-Men and derail the Sentinel regime.

This proves to be a hard task for Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), who has to convince drunken no-hoper Professor X and a stubborn Magneto to put aside their feud over mutual love interest Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), who is set out to kill the leading genetic scientist behind the Sentinel machines.

The superhero film features a stellar line-up of old school talent, with Halle Berry reprising her role as ‘Storm’ and Shawn Ashmore as ‘Iceman’, alongside fresh faces such as Evan Peters who plays a wonderful ‘Quicksilver.’

Their characterisation of the fictional comic figures defines the movie’s success; adding charisma, humanity and at times humour to their intense roles.

The complicated storyline is carefully explained by director, Bryan Singer, who avoids any issues of continuity as the film moves between past and present timeframes while the two-hour running time flies by faster than Quicksilver himself, with incredible 3D effects and brilliant filmography adding to the film’s flow.

The plot throughout the later half of the movie was at times too brief and though the film had its definite moments of suspense, it wasn’t chair-grabbing, nail-biting drama.

Despite this, comic fans can rest at ease knowing they’re in for a breathtakingly produced film made all the more sensational by a talented cast as some of our favourite superheroes.
