Our friends at Business Insider decided to do a little research to see what the most expensive movies ever made were.

Taking data from IMDB and Box Office Mojo and adjusting for inflation, the watery swashbuckling movie, 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End' (2007), took out top spot as the most expensive movie ever made, costing a whopping $341.8 million to make.

Despite the exorbitant price tag, the Johnny Depp led film -- and third in the franchise -- went on to make some serious box office dough, raking in $1.04 billion.

From the same film family, 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Deadman's Chest' (2006) cost $263.7 million and grossed $1.13 billion at the box office, while 'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' (2011) made $1.11 billion in box office takings.

Much to our surprise, James Cameron's highest grossing box office films -- 'Titanic' (1997) and 'Avatar' (2009) -- only came in at numbers three and nine on the most expensive movie list.
